Type of Position: Research Technician, non-exempt, full time

Department: R&D

Reports To: Senior Scientist (head of R&D)

Direct Reports: None

Location: 620 Applegate St, Philomath, OR 97370

Schedule/Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM unless otherwise arranged with Supervisor (nights and weekend as dictated by schedule)

Lazarus 3D’s Pre-Sure platform allows surgeons to rehearse every surgery ahead of time on a replica of their patient created in hyper realistic materials. This technology has the potential to transform patient safety and outcomes. Lazarus 3D’s Skill-Sure platform delivers world class surgical training solutions to healthcare professionals, reducing the learning curve, aiding development of innovative solutions, and is used by medical device companies for training, demonstration and marketing. Your Role at Lazarus 3D:

In this role, you are responsible for the development, testing, and production of high-fidelity surgical training and rehearsal models. Your work will center on performing material characterizations, preparing and fabricating prototype anatomical models, and supporting experiments that evaluate the mechanical, physical, and surgical performance of new polymers and model components. You will work closely with scientists and engineers to execute test plans, document results, and help refine materials and processes that advance the realism and consistency of our products.

In addition to hands-on bench work, you will play a critical role in maintaining an efficient, safe, and well-organized laboratory environment. This includes preparing materials, managing inventory, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and supporting data collection for internal R&D studies and product development efforts. You will follow established SOPs and work instructions, provide feedback on process improvements, and collaborate with the wider R&D team to ensure that every prototype and model produced meets the exacting standards required for surgical education and research.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform tasks as assigned by supervisor/manager.

  • Operate and maintain key equipment (incubators, mixers, texture analyzers, ovens, water baths, etc)
  • Perform basic mechanical testing of polymer samples and tissue samples
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment (such as washing dishes daily)
  • Record experimental procedures, observations, and results with strict accuracy in lab notebooks and digital systems
  • Help prepare sample sets for surgeon testing and validation studies.
  • Follow written SOPs, work instructions, and safety procedures; report deviations immediately.
  • Support environmental monitoring and equipment logging (calibration checklists, maintenance logs)
  • Communicate operational constraints, equipment issues, or reproducibility concerns promptly.
  • Occasionally assist in demonstrations, surgeon evaluations, or internal testing sessions.
  • Occasional reagent preparation and experimental support as directed by Supervisor/Manager

Qualifications and Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Associates degree or Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Human Physiology, or related field; or equivalent laboratory experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort with precise measurement, documentation, and following SOPs.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude (e.g. able to troubleshoot equipment, understand fixtures/tools, follow diagrams)
  • General laboratory skills required to perform duties as assigned.

Other Knowledge and Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with wet-lab techniques, polymer handling, or mechanical/biomechanical testing
  • Experience in a regulated environment (ISO 13485, GMP, GLP, or medical device manufacturing)
  • Readily adapts to changes in the work environment and facilitates the adaptation of the team to change
  • Prior experience in R&D, prototyping, or material-characterization projects
  • Experience with dissection and/or human anatomy
  • Experience with 3D printing and/or CAD

Required Familiarity with the following Equipment:

  • Computer
  • General lab equipment

Working Environment & Physical Requirements:

Approximately 95% of responsibilities are performed in the lab, 5% in an office environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly:

  • Experience prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping, and occasional fast walking.
  • Use hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate hand tools and laboratory equipment..
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Will have exposure to biologics and chemicals (up to 50% of the work period)
  • Wear PPE including nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and lab coat. Additional PPE may be required for certain tasks.
