About Paradromics

We are building a direct data interface with the brain to provide technology solutions to unmet medical challenges. A revolutionary leap beyond today’s research-grade brain computer interfaces (BCI), our Connexus® Direct Data Interface (DDI) collects neural signals at an industry-leading high data-rate and is designed for long-term daily use. Our first clinical application will enable severely motor-impaired people to communicate and independently use a computer, translating their neural signals into synthesized speech, text, and cursor control. We will continue to expand the capabilities of our massively scalable platform to support a pipeline of future applications that could benefit millions.

Job Description

Paradromics is looking for an Applied Scientist to help design and develop studies for speech and motor BCIs. In this role, the Applied Scientist will reduce knowledge of neurophysiology to practice as software systems for online BCI decoding, experiment session workflow, and offline analysis. They will work with the Paradromics team to develop associated study designs to test and continually improve these software systems.

This position is instrumental in supporting the company’s continued growth and future success, and requires an individual with a proactive, “can-do,” self-starter attitude who is excited about working collaboratively and diving into hands-on, detailed clinical work in an early-stage medical device company. This position is based on-site in Oakland, California and will have less than 25% travel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with neurophysiology data and the Paradromics Connexus DDI system to develop software for BCI studies and BCI application development.
  • Keeping up to date with neurophysiology and BCI literature in support of Paradromics design and development activities.
  • Analyzing preclinical data, hardware diagnostics data, and clinical data in support of BCI system design and development.
  • Contributing to manuscripts, presentations, and other technical/scientific content.
  • In collaboration with the Paradromics Engineering Team, supporting development and refinement of neurophysiology and neural engineering supported design specifications.
  • In collaboration with the Paradromics Clinical Team, supporting the development of clinical study documents, including but not limited to IRB and clinical trial protocols, study forms/reports, and training/educational materials.
  • Working collaboratively with Regulatory Affairs, Quality, Project Management, external CROs or Medical Writers, Training, Marketing, Senior Management and investigational sites.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Ability to communicate (verbal & written, informal & formal presentations) data science and machine learning activities and outcomes to collaborators with diverse technical backgrounds
  • Neurophysiology data analysis, particularly data from intracortical implants
  • Experience applying machine learning and signal processing techniques to neurophysiology data for clinical BCI studies
  • Experience deploying/analyzing experiments for human participants or animal models that incorporate closed-loop machine learning algorithms
  • Experience developing/deploying experiments for human participants that involve stimulus presentation and behavioral data collection
  • Experience analyzing and visualizing large-volume time series data
  • Proficiency programming in Python and using scientific processing libraries (e.g. numpy, pandas, scipy)
  • Experience developing software collaboratively

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience developing performant, real-time algorithms and systems that support their real world use
  • Experience developing and evaluating machine learning algorithms with PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow
  • Experience developing algorithms and software in a regulated industry, particularly in the medical device industry

Required Education

  • PhD in neuroscience, bioengineering, electrical engineering, or computer science with thesis work relevant to neural engineering or equivalent experience through industry roles
