About Paradromics

We are building a direct data interface with the brain to provide technology solutions to unmet medical challenges. A revolutionary leap beyond today’s research-grade brain computer interfaces (BCI), our Connexus® Direct Data Interface (DDI) collects neural signals at an industry-leading high data-rate and is designed for long-term daily use. Our first clinical application will enable severely motor-impaired people to communicate and independently use a computer, translating their neural signals into synthesized speech, text, and cursor control. We will continue to expand the capabilities of our massively scalable platform to support a pipeline of future applications that could benefit millions.

The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laser Systems Engineer to join our team, responsible for building, sustaining and continuously improving our existing ultrafast and pulsed laser systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laser technology, optics, mechanical engineering, and motion systems, with experience in operating and maintaining complex laser systems. We are looking for a dynamic, hands-on problem solver who likes to build (and fix) things and enjoys working in a smart, fast-moving team.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in engineering development efforts of custom ultrafast laser systems for production of advanced medical device components
  • Sustain and continuously improve the performance of existing ultrafast laser systems for micromachining and pulsed laser systems for welding and thin film removal.
  • Troubleshoot and repair laser systems, identifying and resolving technical issues to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and R&D, to identify areas for improvement and implement changes to increase efficiency, yield, and quality.
  • Develop and implement process improvements, including optimizing laser system parameters, beam delivery, and process recipes to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring issues.
  • Develop and maintain documentation, including system design documents, operation manuals, and maintenance procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations, including laser safety standards and industry best practices.
  • Provide training and support to operators and technicians on laser system operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in laser technology, recommending improvements and upgrades to existing systems.
  • Optimize the performance of galvo scanners and stages, ensuring precise and accurate movement of the laser beam.
  • Troubleshoot and repair motion system issues, including servo motor control, encoder feedback, and motion profiling.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Laser Technology, Optics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in designing, developing, and operating laser systems, including ultrafast laser systems and pulsed laser systems.
  • Strong understanding of laser physics, optics, and mechanical engineering principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repair of complex laser systems.
  • Familiarity with motion systems, including galvo scanners, stages, servo motors, and encoder feedback.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a focus on delivering high-quality results under tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with laser safety standards and industry best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laser system automation and control systems, including programming languages such as Python.
  • Familiarity with quality control and assurance procedures, including ISO 13485 standards.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Proficiency in CAD design software, such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
  • Experience with micromachining, welding, and thin film removal applications using laser systems.
