Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced director to lead our software team based out of our Orlando office. This pivotal role will be responsible for driving the strategic direction, innovation, and execution of developing our software products. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in engineering and defense, with a proven track record of leading successful software development initiatives in a fast-paced, startup environment, while applying solid, practical engineering best practices. This is an on-site role. Travel up to 20%.
Key Responsibilities:
Technology Development: Responsible for guiding the development of our two premier products, ATARS and ARCADE, as well as new software development initiatives. Give direction to the software engineers based on strategic needs as well as day-to-day demands. Create, apply, and enforce industry-best processes, techniques, and practices to ensure high quality, maintainable, and extensible software. Utilize your proven experience to lead in our efforts to maximize software performance with limited computing resources in extreme physical environments. Take on coding and other development tasks in surge situations – this is a hands-on roll.
Team Management: Manage and mentor our geographically dispersed software team (over 20 people across three sites) by creating, implementing, and enforcing effective collaboration processes so team members can operate as single entity performing in unison to our goals. Foster this collaborative environment by emphasizing a pragmatic, controlled discipline while operating in a fast-paced, demanding, changing landscape – we are building new technology that the world has never seen before. This includes ensuring team members are placed in positions to best nurture their careers – and this will require regular one-on-one meetings with your staff. Manage expectations with our product managers to respond to their needs while using your proven experience to ensure that schedule is met, costs are contained, and our software attains world-class quality.
Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilize data from a combination of customer/flight data, analysis of code, and testing results to drive technical direction and project execution. Apply your deep experience with this data to quickly pivot between priorities and adjust resource focus, accordingly.
Stakeholder Communication: Play a crucial role in communicating software progress and capabilities to internal and external stakeholders, including military and defense industry customers, investors, and partners. Your ability to succinctly communicate verbally and in writing are critical to this position.
