These include: buying and selling bitcoin directly to and from cold storage, bitcoin retirement accounts, bitcoin-backed loans, concierge services to educate clients on best security practices, and cold storage solutions for institutions and other businesses.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Tax Manager plays a vital role in our accounting department, reporting to and supporting the VP of Accounting in achieving the annual and ongoing goals of the tax function. This individual will be part of a dynamic, forward-thinking accounting organization that values innovation, accuracy, and continuous growth. The Tax Manager will oversee the company’s tax compliance, reporting, planning, and audit efforts across federal, state, and local jurisdictions. In addition, this role will be responsible to help identify tax savings opportunities, support strategic decision-making, and manage relationships with regulatory agencies and external tax advisors.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Lead the company’s U.S. tax efforts across income, franchise, sales and use, and payroll tax.
- Manage the organization’s tax compliance calendar, ensuring timely and accurate filings.
- Prepare and review quarterly and annual tax provision components, including book-tax differences and tax footnote disclosures.
- In collaboration with external tax advisors, manage the preparation and review of federal and state consolidated returns, separate state returns, quarterly estimates, and extension calculations.
- Ensure timely and accurate payroll tax compliance, including year-end reporting, reconciliations, and vendor coordination.
- Collaborate with payroll vendors, finance, legal, and P&O teams to ensure proper tax setup and compliance.
- Manage payroll tax accounts, including registrations, notices, audits, amendments, and penalty resolution.
- File annual 1099 filings (MISC, NEC, INT, A, DA, etc.).
Sales & Use Tax
- Oversee sales and use tax compliance, reporting, and planning.
- Ensure timely preparation, filing, and payment of sales and use tax returns in all applicable jurisdictions.
- Maintain and manage exemption certificates and ensure accurate application.
- Monitor regulatory changes and implement efficient, compliant strategies.
- Review and reconcile monthly tax filings, payments, and journal entries
Audit & Risk Management
- Serve as the primary contact for federal, state, and local audits and inquiries.
- Coordinate documentation, manage auditor requests, and negotiate settlements when needed.
- Identify and mitigate audit risk through process improvements and proactive compliance strategies.
- Manage workers’ compensation audits and 401(k) non-discrimination testing.
- Adhere to internal controls and coordinate documentation evidencing internal controls have been followed.
Strategy & Advisory
- Monitor new and pending U.S. tax legislation, assessing potential impacts on the company.
- Research complex tax issues, drafting technical memos and presenting findings to management.
- Develop and implement tax-efficient solutions, internal controls, and process improvements.
- Partner cross-functionally with finance, payroll, legal, and external consultants to ensure compliance and alignment.
WHO YOU ARE
- You have a bachelor’s degree or higher in Tax, Accounting, or related field.
- You have 5–7 years of relevant tax experience in corporate tax and/or public accounting, with progressive responsibilities.
- You have prior experience in a high-growth SaaS, FinTech, Cryptocurrency or related technology environment strongly preferred.
- You have strong technical knowledge of ASC 740 and U.S. GAAP accounting principles.
- You have a deep understanding of U.S. sales and use tax laws, nexus rules, and taxability.
- You are skilled at managing tax provisions, compliance cycles, and audit defense.
- You have strong financial acumen with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- You apply a continuous improvement mindset to transform provision and compliance cycles or enhance data quality.
- You demonstrate proven ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- You are proficient with Microsoft Excel, Google Suite, and accounting systems.
- You are highly analytical, detail-oriented, and adept at problem-solving.
- You are a strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to drive process improvements and manage projects.
- You live in the United States.
Even Better
- You are a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - Strongly preferred.
- You hold a Master of Science in Taxation (MST) degree - Strongly preferred.
- You have experience with NetSuite.
- You have prior work experience in FinTech, Bitcoin, or startup environments.
- You have basic knowledge of Bitcoin, digital assets, or blockchain—and a demonstrated passion to learn more.
